Sun Jifa lost his hands in an explosion in a blast fishing accident, so he built his own replacements (I assume he had some help from neighbours and family… to answer the obvious objection)
I’m not sure this is something for China to be proud of though (Proud of him, certainly, but the health care service might be looked at with some criticism if they didn’t step in and provide prosthetics for him in the first place)
According to Wikipedia blast fishing is illegal (maybe even in China), and it wouldn’t surprise me if people only receive minimal treatment for injuries sustained while committing (or preparing for) a crime. Because that’s the kind of harsh attitude they seem to have in China.
But I agree with everyone else that it’s impressive work on his part.
